It's astounding how dark people were in the Middle Ages.They believed that guilt has mass (hence the expression "the severity of guilt"). Here is a local story that happened in a remote German province in the 16th century. The Inquisition received a denunciation from a local alkanaut that he allegedly witnessed a confident girl flying over a field at night on an unidentified animal.Suspicion fell on Susanna, but unexpectedly, her acquaintance Jeanne comes to court and tries to take the blame, but her arguments sound unconvincing.Therefore, the fierce inquisitor (a crank in red) makes a "wise decision": to suspend both on a balance scale and ask tricky questions, lifting and lowering the suspects in turn.
