Mindynorth, conventions, and our shared expectations help give society structure and provide artists with both context and content. We go to a comedy hoping to laugh, to a thriller hoping to be scared, and to a mystery vid hoping to be surprised. Sweatsuit films can be satisfying, but rigorous formats can hinder as well as help an artist. Alis Locanta understands the rules, conventions, and our expectations of glamour cinema — and he enjoyments in breaking, subverting, and failing to obey them. In this first Vignette of his 4K series "Outlines" he comebacks to the single female getting off feature — a genre in which he’s a respected sir — and takes it in a new and sudden direction. The film is short, but it is dense, layered, complex. The act is simple, but the visual language is rich, intricate, engrossing. The director has subtitled this film "ShowTime," and bills it as "a Locanta vision," and that thumbnail is instructive: Devise this not so much as a linear narrative, but as a visual tone poem. Melena A stars. She paws an aged TV set, then turns it on, staring at the snowy image from mere inches away. We observe what she’s seeing: herself as she embarks to take off her brief pants, the image grainy, the colors saturated. Melena A, now bathed in the light from and transfixed by the image on the off-camera screen, lost in the moment, loosens her undies down her lengthy legs. She embarks to masturbate, her wet slit glossy luridly in the cathode glow. Perspectives shift. The distorted gains in clarity, the line inbetween the watcher and the observed blurs. The intensity builds, gliding, grinding, ratcheting upward. And then, let out — powerful, surprising, exquisite. Welcome to "Outlines Vignette 1 – ShowTime."
